FAQ Furnace Repair Questions
Here are some of the most common questions asked about furnace repairs.
A clogged furnace filter can cause a furnace to shut off. Dirty filters are the most frequent cause of furnace issues. Dust and dirt restrict airflow—and if the filter gets too clogged, the heat exchanger will overheat and shut off too quickly, and your house won’t warm up.
Once the gas has had time to dissipate, turn the knob to “Pilot.” Then, hold down the “Reset” button and bring the flame of a long lighter close to the pilot light opening. This should light the furnace pilot light. Once you are sure the pilot light is on, release your pressure on the reset button.
Check to make sure power to the furnace is on. There’s a power disconnect switch by the furnace, even gas systems use electricity. Check the fuse/breaker at the electrical panel for the furnace to make sure the breaker has not tripped. Make sure the power switch next to the furnace is in the “On” position.
Standing Pilot Ignition. You’re probably familiar with a standing pilot light. It’s a little blue flame that sits in front of one of the furnace burners and burns continuously. Hot water heaters, gas fireplaces, and old gas stoves also often have similar standing pilot lights.
